Riez-la-Romaine historical town
At the heart of the vast (800 km2)Valensole plateau a tabular hill (St Maxime) overlooks the confluence of three valleys already used during Early Roman Empire as communication ways. Augustus founded in the last century BC, the Reii Apollinaires colony at the crossroads that connects Aix and Fréjus to the Haute Provence.
The testimony of these 20 centuries that come down to us are pathetic because frequently the remains have been used as quarries for the builders.
-
Four granite monolith columns toped by a carved architrave (epistyle) are the remains of a temple built in the 1st century in honor of Apollo
-
On the ruins of Roman baths, a baptistery was erected during the 5th century with reused antique materials. It belongs to the rare early Christian building in Provence, although its dome has been rebuilt in the 12th century
Riez was a bishop town from the 5th century until the Revolution. The antic cathedral is located in the center of the baptistery and its remains are still visible. It was destroyed at the very end of the 15th century and transferred inside the walls.
The14th century left us the ruins of a military architecture, of which the walls, the clock tower, the door and the Samson and Ayguière gates remain.
The Main Street is steeped in medieval atmosphere, with its narrow streets linked with each other by the "andrones" (covered passageways under the houses), the high facades of its ancient buildings that once housed shops. The Mazan hotel and several houses facades evoke the Renaissance architecture.
Many fountains and wash houses quench the travelers’ thirst. Riez owns an exceptionally rich heritage. Come and enjoy its quality and diversity.
